Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026: From Business Meetings to Cultural Experiences

Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026: Business Meetings and Cultural Discoveries

Taking part in an international tourism event means more than attending meetings and exchanging business cards. It is also an opportunity to discover a destination, meet the people working in its tourism industry and identify potential partnerships.

I attended Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026 as a media representative of  NextJourneys, with an additional interest in discovering local tourism products and travel agencies that could become partners for projects targeting the Romanian market.

The event was followed by a familiarisation tour, during which we visited several places in Sri Lanka, including Kurunegala, Sigiriya Rock and Dambulla Cave Temple. It was a few days that combined professional meetings with the opportunity to explore a country that has much more to offer than the beaches and landscapes for which it is widely known.

Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026: Meeting Tourism Industry Professionals

Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026 took place in October and aimed to bring together local travel agencies, tourism service providers and international professionals interested in developing business relationships.

MICE stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions. It is an important segment of the tourism industry, attracting corporate groups and international events and generating business for hotels, transport companies, restaurants, travel agencies and other local service providers.

According to information published by the Sri Lankan media, the organisers announced the participation of more than 120 international buyers and media representatives, alongside over 125 local suppliers. One of the stated targets was to facilitate more than 10,000 B2B meetings. These figures reflect the numbers and targets announced by the organisers, rather than a confirmed final assessment of the event. During the exhibition, I had my own table for business meetings and spoke with representatives of local travel agencies and tourism companies.

One aspect that caught my attention was their interest in the Romanian market. I believe one possible reason is the existing connection between the two countries, including the significant number of Sri Lankan citizens working in Romania.

This connection could provide a starting point for developing greater interest in Sri Lanka as a travel destination, although concrete data would be needed to assess its actual impact on tourism.

The discussions did not end when the exhibition closed. We have since started receiving emails from local travel agencies presenting their offers and services. We will review these proposals to see which products might suit our audience and what forms of cooperation could be developed.

For now, we are still exchanging information and evaluating the offers. Nevertheless, this is a tangible first step, and one of the advantages of attending international tourism events is the opportunity to continue building relationships after returning home.

MICE Tourism in Sri Lanka: More Than Hotels and Conference Rooms

A destination looking to attract international events needs to offer more than meeting venues and accommodation. Transport connections, infrastructure, event organisation and the experiences available outside the main programme are all important.

Local media coverage surrounding Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026 highlighted the importance of air connectivity and cooperation between the public and private sectors. Both are essential for a country seeking to strengthen its position in the international events market.

Sri Lanka also has an advantage in the diversity of experiences it can offer. Its cultural heritage, natural landscapes and historical sites can complement the professional side of a business trip. An international event can be followed by a cultural tour, several days exploring the island or experiences organised specifically for participants. I had the opportunity to discover part of this diversity during the familiarisation tour that followed the exhibition.

Kurunegala, Sigiriya and Dambulla: Discovering Sri Lanka Beyond the Coast

The programme included visits accompanied by local guides who were knowledgeable about the places we explored and able to explain their historical and cultural significance.

For me, this was an important part of the experience. A tourist attraction can impress you with what you see, but a good guide helps you understand the history behind it and why the place matters.

Kurunegala: A Stop in Sri Lanka’s Interior

Kurunegala was one of the stops on our tour.

The city and its surroundings offer a glimpse of a part of Sri Lanka that is less associated with the classic image of a beach holiday. Stops like this can add variety to a journey through the country’s interior, providing a different perspective on local life and areas that receive less international attention than the main tourist destinations.

For visitors interested in exploring beyond the coastline, places such as Kurunegala can be part of a more varied itinerary.

Sigiriya Rock: One of Sri Lanka’s Most Recognisable Landmarks

Climbing Sigiriya Rock was one of the highlights of the programme. This impressive rock formation, topped by the remains of an ancient royal complex, is among Sri Lanka’s best-known attractions. Its dramatic position in the landscape is striking, but the history preserved here is just as important.

The visit revealed another side of Sri Lanka, where natural scenery and cultural heritage come together in an experience quite different from a holiday spent entirely at a beach resort. For travellers who want to discover more of the island beyond its coastal destinations, Sigiriya deserves an important place on a cultural itinerary.

Dambulla Cave Temple: Temples Carved into the Rock

Another place we visited was Dambulla Cave Temple, a complex of cave temples known for its Buddha statues and the murals covering its walls and ceilings. The visit offers an insight into Sri Lanka’s religious and artistic heritage. The statues, paintings and atmosphere inside the caves create an experience different from the one at Sigiriya, even though both sites are important parts of the country’s cultural heritage.

Together, these visits show how varied a journey through Sri Lanka’s interior can be.

An Encounter with Local Wildlife

The programme also gave us the opportunity to see elephants, adding a wildlife experience to the cultural visits. Wildlife is one of Sri Lanka’s major attractions, and observing animals can be part of a trip that combines history, nature and local experiences.

However, choosing responsible operators and paying attention to the conditions in which animals are observed are important considerations when planning such activities.

What Comes Next After Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026?

For us, participating in Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2026 was both an opportunity to discover the destination and a chance to establish contacts with local tourism professionals interested in the Romanian market.

The exchange of emails has already started, and the proposals we have received will help us better understand the tourism products available and identify opportunities for future cooperation. It is still too early to talk about concrete business results. The contacts we have established are a first step, and we will assess the proposals in the coming period to see which projects might take shape.

Beyond the professional meetings, the familiarisation tour allowed us to discover part of Sri Lanka’s history and diversity.

These two sides of the experience complement each other. Promoting a destination and identifying opportunities for cooperation requires more than knowing what it has to offer. It also means meeting the people who work in the industry and understanding the experiences they can create for visitors.

For Sri Lanka, combining its cultural heritage, natural attractions and tourism infrastructure with international business events offers opportunities to reach new markets. For us, the next step is to see which of the connections made during the exhibition can develop into meaningful projects for Romanian travellers.
