ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026: Innovation, Iconic Destinations, and Global Travel Trends

My Experience at ATF 2026

I attended the 45th edition of the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) from January 28–30, 2026 in Cebu City, Philippines. This forum, the most important annual event for Southeast Asian tourism, was held under the theme “Navigating Our Tourism Future, Together”, highlighting ASEAN countries’ commitment to sustainable, competitive, and innovative tourism.

As a media representative, I had the unique opportunity to observe firsthand the dynamics of the event and how ministers, national tourism organization leaders, and industry experts collaborate on common strategies, share best practices, and develop the regional tourism market.

The Scale and Importance of ATF

ATF 2026 brought together over 5,000 official delegates, making it one of the largest and most influential tourism summits organized by ASEAN in recent years. I attended presentations, discussion sessions, cultural events, and networking activities, gaining a complete perspective on the evolution of Southeast Asian tourism and its strategic directions for the future.

Recognizing Excellence in Tourism

At ATF 2026, the ASEAN Tourism Standards Awards were presented in categories such as:

  • Green Hotels
  • Clean Tourist Cities
  • MICE Destinations

These awards highlight the region’s commitment to high-quality and sustainable tourism, giving international travelers confidence in professional, responsible, and authentic experiences.

About ASEAN and ATF

ASEAN is a union of Southeast Asian countries, established in 1967, aimed at promoting economic cooperation, political stability, regional security, and social and cultural development.

It consists of 11 member states: Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, Brunei, Myanmar, and Singapore. Together, these countries have approximately 680 million inhabitants and a land area slightly larger than Europe.

The ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) is a B2B trade event bringing together all member countries. Unlike consumer fairs, ATF does not sell trips directly to the public. Its first edition was held in 1981 in Singapore, and since then, it has become a driving force for tourism growth in the region, balancing competition with collaboration.

In 2025, the total number of tourists across ASEAN countries reached approximately 125 million, fueling significant investments in infrastructure and hotel networks.

Geographic and Cultural Diversity

The ASEAN region is incredibly diverse:

  • Laos – landlocked
  • Philippines – over 7,600 islands
  • Timor-Leste – covers only half an island
  • Vietnam – stretches almost 1,700 km from north to south

Iconic Destinations

  • Bali, Phuket, Palawan, Boracay, Cebu, – stunning beaches, snorkeling, diving, and tropical island adventures
  • Cultural attractions – Angkor Wat temples, historic cities in Cambodia, and ultra-modern cities like Singapore

Local Cuisine

  • Thailand: Pad Thai, Tom Yum
  • Vietnam: Pho
  • Indonesia: Nasi Goreng
  • Philippines: Adobo, Sinigang, Lechon

Every country offers unique experiences that make a vacation truly memorable.

ASEAN Tourism Statistics (2025)

Country Tourists 2025 Revenue 2025 ($)
Philippines 7.5 million 12 billion
Vietnam 21 million 39 billion
Indonesia 17 million 20 billion
Singapore 15.5 million 18 billion
Malaysia 42 million 32 billion
Cambodia 5.5 million 5 billion
Laos 4.5 million 1.8 billion
Thailand 33 million 49 billion

Diverse Experiences and Value for Money

  • Adventure: trekking in the mountains of Vietnam and Laos
  • Relaxation: tropical beaches and islands
  • Culture: festivals, temples, and local traditions
  • Cuisine: Pad Thai, Tom Yum, Pho, Nasi Goreng

Travel in ASEAN offers excellent value for money, combining luxury resorts, traditional hotels, organized tours, and authentic cuisine without compromising quality.

Global Appeal of ASEAN

Southeast Asia is increasingly attractive for travelers from around the world. The region allows for combining tropical beaches, mountain adventures, and modern urban experiences in a single trip, ideal for individual travelers, groups, and themed tours.

International tourists can explore historic temples, vibrant local markets, traditional festivals, and authentic culinary experiences, all within relatively short travel distances thanks to the proximity of ASEAN countries and modern infrastructure. Continuous investments in hotels, transport, and tourism services ensure a safe, comfortable, and memorable experience.

With its geographic, cultural, and culinary diversity, combined with excellent value for money, Southeast Asia offers the perfect mix of exoticism, adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable experiences, making it one of the world’s most sought-after travel regions.
