The World’s Largest Orthodox Cathedral Is in Romania: The People’s Salvation Cathedral – A Monument of Faith and National Pride
In the heart of Bucharest, just steps away from the Palace of Parliament, rises the People’s Salvation Cathedral – the largest and tallest Orthodox cathedral in the world. Standing 135 meters (443 feet) high, this monumental landmark dominates the city skyline and symbolizes the spiritual rebirth of modern Romania.
The idea of building a great national cathedral was first proposed in 1884, shortly after Romania gained independence. However, the project only became reality in 2010, when the foundation stone was laid. The cathedral was partially consecrated in 2018, marking the Centenary of Romania’s Great Union (1918–2018).
Built from reinforced concrete and steel, with facades of stone and gold mosaics, the cathedral can host over 5,000 worshippers inside and up to 30,000 people on the surrounding esplanade. Its vast underground levels include museums, conference halls, and even modern shelters — a unique blend of Byzantine tradition and contemporary engineering.
The total construction cost is estimated at over €250 million, financed through contributions from the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Romanian government, and private donors. While the project has sparked debate due to its scale and cost, for many Romanians it represents the fulfillment of a 130-year-old national dream.
The building’s design merges Byzantine traditions with modern engineering, emphasizing both spiritual grandeur and national pride.
Thus, Bucharest’s cathedral stands as the largest Orthodox church in the world by volume and height.
For visitors, the cathedral offers a truly memorable experience. Its central location, grand design, and powerful symbolism make it one of Romania’s must-see attractions. Guided tours allow guests to admire the stunning mosaics, learn about the building’s symbolism, and enjoy panoramic views over Bucharest.
