Flamenco in Santa Cruz: A Vibrant Show by Pasion Global
With numerous genres and subgenres, flamenco encompasses dance, harmony, guitar, clapping, a kind of foot-tapping, and exaggerated body movements. A simple guitar, a voice, one or two dancers, or more, and energy. All possible human emotions are conveyed to the audience through flamenco. It is more than just a dance; it is a vibrant expression of Spanish history, emotions, and spirit. In Seville, there is even a museum dedicated to flamenco.
Flamenco has its roots in southern Spain, in the region of Andalusia, and has evolved over the centuries through a synthesis of diverse cultures, including Moorish, Jewish, and Gypsy influences. Born from the sufferings and joys of the people, flamenco is a profound art that combines dance, music, and song into an emotional performance. Each movement and each musical note tell a story of passion and pain, happiness and sadness.
Flamenco artists dedicate years of training and perseverance to perfect this complex art. Behind every performance are endless hours of rehearsals, physical pain, and devotion. Flamenco requires not just technique but also a deep emotional connection with the music and the audience. Dancers use their entire being to convey intense emotions, and this dedication is evident in every movement, every gesture.
Colorful Costumes
Flamenco costumes are an essential part of the performance, adding color and drama. Women wear long dresses, often adorned with ruffles and lace, in vibrant colors like red, black, and blue. Men wear elegant suits, often in dark tones, which highlight their powerful and graceful movements. Each costume is carefully chosen to complement and enhance the dancer’s artistic expression.
Music: Guitar, Voice, and Clapping
Flamenco music is a complex combination of Spanish guitar, voice, and rhythms created by clapping (known as “palmas”). The flamenco guitar, with its rapid and precise chords, sets the rhythm and energy of the dance. The singer (cantaor) brings a special emotional depth, interpreting lyrics full of meaning and feeling. The clappers add an additional rhythm, accentuating moments of intensity and creating a perfect symbiosis between dance, music, and song.
Flamenco Pasion at the Timanfaya Hall in Santa Cruz
Pasion Global invites you to a unique flamenco show in Santa Cruz, a rare opportunity to experience the authenticity and passion of an unparalleled Spanish cultural tradition. In an intimate and emotional setting, you will witness an authentic flamenco demonstration, where impressive choreography harmonizes with intense solo moments. It is not a grand show but one full of intensity, where the artists manage to capture the audience’s attention through their graceful and expressive movements, conveying powerful emotions with every step and gesture.
Alongside the dancers, two accomplished musicians complete the flamenco picture. A virtuoso guitarist, whose precise and passionate chords set the rhythm of the show, and a singer (cantaor) with a deep and soulful voice, who adds a unique emotional dimension to each performance. Together, these artists create a captivating atmosphere, managing to transport the audience to the heart of Spanish culture.
The show is structured to offer both collective choreography moments and solo moments that highlight each artist’s individual talent. Group choreographies are perfectly synchronized, reflecting the cohesion and chemistry between the dancers. Every movement is calculated to add spectacularity and energy, making the audience feel the intensity and dynamism of flamenco dance. In solo moments, each dancer expresses their own story and emotion through dance, offering a unique perspective on the art of flamenco. These intimate moments allow each artist to shine, showcasing their mastery and dedication to this art form.
After the show, we spoke with Eva M Rodriguez, the artistic director and soloist of Pasion Global. An extraordinary flamenco dancer who shared some thoughts with us to pass on to everyone.
“I have been dancing since I was 10 years old and have attended various private flamenco schools until finishing the Conservatory. For me, each song, each genre signifies something, but my favorite is pena, which speaks of pain, suffering, and through which you can express yourself most intensely. This best conveys the emotion during the dance! Every day you have to train, practice, develop your technique; every day there is something new to learn. The hours dedicated to flamenco are daily and can be 3 or 5. I prefer intimate shows where you can improvise and show who you truly are. Yes, sometimes you improvise but only in solo performances, not in group choreographies where everything has to be simultaneous. The flamenco world is vast, but among my preferences are La Lupi from Malaga, Beatriz Morales, or Jesus Carmona. Talented and devoted people to flamenco. We have big plans for the future of Pasion Global. We want to refresh this show with new costumes and choreographies, but we are also working on a tour of the troupe in Italy in the near future. What is most important to a flamenco artist? Originality, technique, and charisma! Dance every day as if it were the last day and everything will be perfect! I greet and embrace all of you from Romania and invite you to Tenerife for flamenco.”
The Flamenco Pasion show takes place weekly at the Timanfaya Hall in Santa Cruz, and tickets can be purchased both at the box office and online.
