One of the most interesting roads to take in Georgia is in the Prometheus Cage. The biggest cave in Georgia is 20 km away from the city Kutaisi. It has a relatively new history, being discovered in 1984 and destined for tourists in recent years. The first time it was visited was 10 years ago. The Georgian people managed to make it look very beautiful and the road through its galleries brings you up and down when going in narrow tunnels or large hallways.

How can you get there?

In 2018, the taxi is the most comfortable means of transportation between Kutaisi and the cave. The standard price a taxi driver will ask for is 20 lars and they will leave you at the entrance of the complex containing the cave. On the other hand, there is also the possibility of taking a minibus from Kutaisi but you will not reach the cave directly. The first stop will be Tskaltubo where everybody will get off and for sure the driver will propose taking you to the cave for 20 lars. Actually, there is a minibus that goes directly and it is 2 lars per person. So instead of paying 40 lars both ways, you can only pay 7-8 lars per person both ways. It is up to you.

Ticket pricing and program

The price of a ticket is 20 lars for adults and 5 lars for children and the program is everyday, except for Mondays between 10 am and 5 pm.

There are groups formed every half an hour with a guide in English or Russian and they accompany you in your visit. Access in the cave with no guide is not permitted. There is the possibility of leaving big baggage at the entrance as they are not allowed inside.

Prometheus Cave

40 m below the sea level, it has a length of a little over 1 km, it is completely arranged and the visit is between an hour and an hour and a half, depending on the group you are with. The entrance is in a grot that you get to by going down many stairs and a small entrance takes you to the cave.

The temperature is constantly 15 degrees, irrespective of the season, and makes visiting this cave possible any time of the year.

The tunnel takes you through stalactites and stalagmites that are lit up colorfully in a fairytale manner and they lead to 4 big rooms of the cave. Kolkheti Hall, Medea Hall, Love Hall, Prometheus Hall and Iberia Hall. Being Prometheu’s cave, part of the access is called Argonauts Hall.

You will pass through a long line of visitors during your visit and from a narrow tunnel you will get to a spacious room created under the nature and so on until at the end of the visit it will lead you to the exit tunnel. That opens up to a lake where you can go on a boat ride for 15 lars per person.

The visit to Prometheus Cafe is a walk in the heart of the mountains. The quietness from inside and the beauty of nature seduce you.

As a fun fact, Georgian people can host weddings here, obviously paying.

Outside, a small market full of sellers has different traditional products and is active every time a bus with tourists stops at the cave.

For the Kutaisi area, the city is not very touristic, Prometheus Cave is a visit lasting half a day and it is worth it!
