The Hamangia culture is a late Neolithic culture in the north of the Balkans whose evolution began during the second half of the sixth millennium BC. It is developed in Dobrogea, to the southeast of Muntenia an the northeast of Bulgaria.
The Hamangia culture is characterized by a strong stability, wich hinders our perception of its geographic and chronological evolution.
This conservatorism is particulary apparent in the continuity, over a log period, in the artifacs found in tombs. The clay statuary found there is of remarkable artist expression. The Hamangia culture disappeared in the fifth millenium BC, when migration brought new culture in to region between the Balkans and Carphatians.
One of the greatmasterpiece of late Stone Age art, an extraordinary statuette, knows as “The Thinker” was unearthed in 1956, together with a similar statuette of a female figure, knows as “The sitting woman“, and noumerous other similar, though headless figurines – during archeleogical excavation of Neolithic settlement and burial debris in the lower Danube region, near Cernavoda in Romania.
They were made of clay and baked in the oven.
Created during the Hamangia culture, “The Thinker” is believed to be the oldest know prehistoric sculpture than reflects human introspection, rather than the usual artistic concerns of hunting or fertility. As a result it has become an iconic sculptural figure of prehistoric art. It currently resides in the National Museum of Romanian History in Bucharest.
In 2000, statuette “The Thinker” was named, by an international committee, as being “the one of the 10 artefacs of the eartlhing culture which should represent our planet”.
Remarkable is that the mansit on a small stool. It is one of the oldest depictions of furniture in history. Such a seat is not difficult to make but like so many things it is very difficult inventing it, starting from zero. Also, “The Thinker” reveals its true virtues, a series of interesting and important mathematical relations, being in the public eye, even since the begginning, due to its height parameter – 113 mm, wich is not random at all, and 355 mm – the circle circumferens in wich it is subscribed, becouse these values are unique within the mathematics perimeter, being the only integer numbers whose proportion is “Pi” itself, with an inaccuracy of only 3 tenth gauge of millionims. These numbers were kept by illuminists of the old nation, being afterwardscertified and learned the Geto-Dacians, The heigh of the statuette was not made randomly, demonstrating that Romanian’s ancestors had mathematics and geometry knowledge, and “Pi” calculation from two integer numbers represents maybe the oldest certification of the fundamental relation.
By overturning it with the face down, it can be noticed that the top of the nose, the forearms and the knees are in the same line, showing a praying position. The proof that “The Thinker” was not conceived to remain alone is the feminin figure statuette with the same figure, “The sitting woman” is similar in proportion and sits on the ground, with one leg sticking straight forward, the other bent at knee upon wich rest the hands.
